Mesothelioma - asbestos - where turning

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is cancer of the mesothelium, a membrane which covers most of the internal organs of the body.  The disease causes cells of the mesothelium to divide without control, causing damage near the bodies.  These cells can also go to other parts of the body.  Most often, mesothelioma develops in the peritoneum is the tissue that covers most of the organs in the abdominal cavity.  Mesothelioma is still considered a rare disease even if cases have been reported more frequently over the past 20 years.  The disease is more common in men, as many of the men working in factories where they could have been exposed to asbestos.  Asbestos is a commonly used group of minerals found in roof shingles, the lines of brake, insulation and other products.  It is important to avoid at all costs the inhalation dust asbestos or particles.  70 to 80% of all mesothelioma cases are the result of asbestos are inhaled.

What are the symptoms?

Mesothelioma symptoms may appear after several years of exposure to asbestos.  Some symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, abnormal blood clotting, intestinal obstruction and anemia.  Since these symptoms may be the result of other health problems, it is difficult to diagnose Mesothelioma.  Given this fact, it is very important get a diagnosis by a physician.  Tomogram examination, MRI and x-ray of the chest and abdominal region may assist in identifying mesothelioma, but at the end of a biopsy is necessary to confirm the disease.

Treatment of mesothelioma

The most common treatment is surgery, but it depends on the stage of the disease, the patient's age and General State of health of the patient.  Surgery often involves the removal of a part of the chest or the abdomen wall and some of the tissues surrounding the lining. If a patient was diagnosed with Peritoneal Mesothelioma, a lung may have to remove, with part of the diaphragm is the muscle below the lungs that helps breathing.  Radiation therapy is also a common treatment.  Radiation therapy involves the use of radiation to kill cancer cells and reduce the tumours that may have increased.  Radiation therapy deals only with the area where the radiation has been applied.  Chemotherapy is another form of treatment in which anti cancer drugs are used to kill cancer cells in the body.  Most chemotherapy drugs are given intravenously.  Removal of liquids on the chest and abdomen were also used to treat mesothelioma.
