Mesothelioma - the problem of Zonolite

The link of the asbestos-mesothelioma is discussed again and again. The clear scientific consensus is asbestos exposure can cause mesothelioma in certain circumstances. Zonolite is an example of indirect exposure how can occur.

Asbestos has developed a certain factor "go to" in the media. When things are slow, you can always do a piece on asbestos and how it led to someone horrible health problems. The vast majority of these productions involve workers who have been exposed in the workplace whether an oil refinery, shipyards, factory or anywhere where. Although these cases definitely exist and are very serious, you may be exposed in less dramatic circumstances. Zonolite is a perfect example.

What is the Zonolite? It is the brand name under which most Vermiculite was sold. The vermiculite was used for a multitude of purposes, but mainly as insulation in buildings and houses. The product was sold as a form of "do it yourself" insulation by W.R. Grace. The idea was that owners could purchase the product and then add it to their pre-existing isolation for the purpose of creating a home envelope better that would reduce energy bills.

This may seem a little redundant, but it is not. From 1919 to 1990, the vast majority of Vermiculite was mined outside Libby Montana. Yes, the same area of mines where asbestos was found naturally. You can probably guess where this is directed. Studies of Vermiculite mined outside Libby found that the material was impregnated asbestos mines. W.R. through sustained it was barely in the product, but quickly abandoned it.

Unfortunately, the Zonolite was a great commercial success. The Federal Government felt that it was used in more than 30 million homes. It remains in most of these houses alleged because the nature "do it yourself" product means there are a few documents showing where it was used.

If you plan to do some renovation work, you must keep an eye out for Zonolite. It tends to be Brown and resembles a gravel furniture. The most common use was the joist that separated the attic ceiling in the rooms. However, it may be in the walls as well. If found, do not try to remove it yourself. The dust can be deadly and cause problems such as asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Asbestos is often touted as a problem in the workplace. It is, but found also in a large quantity of products at home, buildings and even schools. If you have any suspicion that it is that Zonolite or produced another level of asbestos was used in your home, contact a specialist of the removal of asbestos.
