Peritoneal Mesothelioma simplified

Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the coating around a particular internal organ. Generically, this coating is called the mesothelium, but will also goes by name more specific to their respective bodies. The pleura, for example, is the lining around the lungs and pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of the disease. Another common form affects the peritoneum, which is the membrane lining the abdominal cavity. This is called Peritoneal Mesothelioma.


Most of the cases of meso-70-80% - are cause by the asbestos which has inhaled or ingested. Certain types of works sites are inherently subject to exposure to asbestos, such as the renovation of older homes. Asbestos has been in large part of production in the United States since almost 40 years, when the evidence linking the disease with equipment between too abundant to ignore, but unfortunately, mesothelioma has a latency period of 20 to 50 years between exposure and the first symptoms.


In Peritoneal Mesothelioma, asbestos fibers lodge in the mesothelium and remain in place for years, causing inflammation. Over time, this ongoing inflammation causes the development of mesothelioma tumors that spread to cover the abdominal cavity together.


Abdominal swelling due to fluid accumulation (ascites) is the symptom is usually noticed first. Other symptoms include vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, weight loss fast, nausea, coagulation in the legs and obstruction in the bowels of blood. If the cancer cells in local tumour metastasis and malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma can move to the top of the abdominal cavity to put pressure on the throat, making it difficult to breath or swallows.
